Parent 2 Parent is a small network of trained volunteers who will help other parents, perhaps with a new diagnosis to make positive adjustments to the news that their child has a disability.
Every Parent 2 Parent volunteer is a parent whose own child has a disability. They know and understand what it is like to cope with a new diagnosis and can offer support. They wil share their knowledge and sign post you to useful information and services.
Parent 2 Parent support is free and confidential; we will support parents and carers of children of all disabilities and special needs.
Parent 2 Parent support can be by telephone, but we can also link parents with a volunteer who lives in their locality, so that they can meet and talk face to face.
The parent and volunteer can decide how often to meet and how long they want to continue getting together. Sometimes, one visit can be all that is needed, some times volunteers may lend support over several months.
Each volunteer will receive training and on-going support to make sure they are comfortable in their important role.
The Parent 2 Parent scheme is ran by a professional Co-ordinator; someone working in the field of disability with close links to professionals and other relevant organisations in the area. Wherever you live in Northumberland, we aim to offer the support you need.
The IN-PACT telephone information service will still provide support in the same way it always has. This will be in addition to the things that we already provide for parents and professionals working with them.
So, if you feel that you would like to discuss your issues with someone who has been in a similar position, or would like information about other forms of support available, then please contact Angela Tait Volunteer Coorinator on 01670 857816 or angela.tait@actionforchildren.org.uk and we will link you with one of our Parent Mentors as soon as possible.
Interested in becoming a Parent 2 Parent mentor please download the volunteer leaflet or contact Angela on 01670 857816.
