Families of children with additional needs often face high levels of day to day stress which can cause a major strain on family units. These are times when support to families is vital.
This section covers the range of support organisations available to families in Northumberland.

Rainbow Support
Branch meetings are alternate Day/Evening meetings.
• Evening meetings held in classroom A2 at Queen Elizabeth High School, Hexham.
• Day Branch Meetings and Rainbow Support Group Meetings held at the Children's Centre, Hexham
• December meetings will be combined.
• No meeting in August due to holidays
• 3 Rainbow Support Group meetings in bold print will be during School Holidays and an activity morning will be provided for children at the Children's Centre. More details nearer the time.

Bliss offers a family mediation service, ADHD coaching, a Social Skills through Sport programme, child anger management, an alternative training programme for 16-24 year olds, family group conferencing, adult anger management, domestic violence support and special educational needs support. Referrals are through school or social care professionals, or you can contact the service directly.

They enable parents and carers to get in contact with other families, both on a local and national basis. They provide a range of information, including a quarterly regional newsletter.

Provide information, help and support for people with Down's syndrome and their families. They organise monthly coffee mornings/drop in sessions, and social and family activities. They have a resource library with books and videos on all aspects of Down's syndrome for members to borrow. They offer information to professionals with an interest in Down's syndrome and organise regular conferences on education, health and all aspects of Down's syndrome.

Dyslexia North East offers support and educational opportunities for families and professionals involved in the care of those affected by dyslexia and related conditions. They meet on a regular basis, usually on the first Thursday of every month from 6.30pm to 8.30pm at the Royal Grammar Junior School, Jesmond. They also offer information, advice and resources for anyone in the North East area who needs help and support. This support group is for the parents and carers of children with disabilities and additional needs. The group meets on the first Tuesday of the month at the Mitchell Memorial Hall from 6.30pm - 8.30pm. They provide support and training sessions for parents and carers of children with a wide variety of disabilities such as autism, ADHD, Asperger Syndrome, epilepsy, challenging behaviour, dyslexia and dyspraxia. Hidden Dys-Ability also run a nurture group which meets every Thursday 10am - 12pm in the family room at Spittal First School. Contact Elizabeth Richardson for more information and meeting times.
